Cambodia Agriculture Value Chain Program (CAVAC) Extension

CAVAC’s goal is to accelerate growth in the value of agricultural production and smallholder incomes in selected provinces (Kampong Thom, Takeo and Kampot) through improved productivity of rice-based farming systems. Under CAVAC’s Research and Extension component, co-funded by AusAID and ACIAR, will: fund and manage programs of priority research activities that address constraints in selected value chains; implement a farmer extension program among participating water user and agribusiness groups; enhance the capacity of extension providers to transfer improved technologies and information to farmers; develop and implement a partnership program linking researchers, extensionists, farmers and agribusiness; assist in sustaining the operational capacity of the Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute.
 
Results to date
·         Four large research programs (in conjunction with the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research) to improve rice and vegetable seed production, growing techniques and water management are well underway to help Cambodian research institutes ensure the agricultural sector continues to innovate and remain competitive in the long term.
·         Around 5,000 model farmers have been trained and are sharing their knowledge with an estimated 30,000 other farming households. Three quarters of these model farmers have reported an increase in their own yields and have observed an increase in their neighbour’s farming practices.
·         Working closely with Provincial Departments of Agriculture, 200 fertiliser and seed retailers have been trained. These retailers are now providing 11,000 farmers with improved farming advice.
·         Nine irrigation schemes have been constructed or are close to being finished and construction of 6 more has started in 2012. These are likely to give around 20,000 households the opportunity to produce at least one more rice crop per year, increasing family incomes.
